    a) 1 only
    b) 2 only
    c) Both 1 and 2
    d) Neither 1 nor 2
    Solution: b)
    Explanation:
    Indus water treaty
    • Indus Water Treaty (IWT) signed on September 19, 1960, between India and
Pakistan and brokered by the World Bank (International Bank for
Reconstruction and Development) which fixed and delimited the rights and
obligations of both countries concerning the use of the waters of the Indus
    River system.
    • Geographical location: The origination of the Indus River from
southwestern Tibet Autonomous Region of China and flows through the
disputed Kashmir region and then into Pakistan to drain into the Arabian
    Sea.
    • Distribution: IWT deals with river Indus and its five tributaries. Eastern
following rivers like Sutlej, Beas and Ravi were given to India whereas
Pakistan got control over Indus, Chenab, and Jhelum.
o Under the provisions of the Indus Waters Treaty, all the waters of the
eastern rivers — the Sutlej, Beas, and Ravi is allocated to India for
    unrestricted use.
o The waters of western rivers — Indus, Jhelum, and Chenab is largely
    for Pakistan. 1 is incorrect.
o The treaty allocates 80% of the water from the six-river Indus

    Q2. Consider the following statements:
  3. Tribunal under Article 323A cannot be established by state legislatures.

    a) 1 only
    b) 2 only
    c) Both 1 and 2
    d) Neither 1 nor 2
    Solution: a)
    Explanation:
The original Constitution did not contain provisions with respect to tribunals. The
42nd Amendment Act of 1976 added a new Part XIV-A to the Constitution. This
part is entitled as ‘Tribunals’ and consists of only two Articles—Article 323 A
dealing with administrative tribunals and Article 323 B dealing with tribunals for
    other matters.
Under Article 323 B, the Parliament and the state legislatures are authorised to
provide for the establishment of tribunals for the adjudication of disputes relating
    to certain matters.
While Article 323 A contemplates establishment of tribunals for public service
matters only, Article 323 B contemplates establishment of tribunals

Q3. Which of the following steps could be taken to control the inflation?
  5. Increasing the Repo Rate by the Reserve Bank
  6. RBI buying government securities from the market
  7. Increasing the interest paid on bonds
Select the correct answer using the code given below.
    a) 1 and 2
    b) 2 and 3
    c) 1 and 3
    d) 1, 2 and 3
    Solution: c)
    Explanation:
Inflation occurs when an economy grows due to increased spending. When this
happens, prices rise and the currency within the economy is worth less than it was
    before.
One popular method of controlling inflation is through a contractionary
monetary policy. Discouraging spending by way of increased interest rates and
reduced money supply helps control rising inflation. It may also lead to increased
unemployment at the same time. The idea here is to make the opportunity cost of
holding money high so that people want to hold and spend less of it. There are
three main tools to carry out a contractionary policy.
The first is to increase interest rates. The Repo Rate is the rate at which banks
borrow money from the RBI. So, when the Reserve Bank increases its interest rate,
banks have no choice but to increase their rates as well. When banks increase their
rates, fewer people want to borrow money because it costs more to do so while that
money accrues at a higher interest. So, spending drops, prices drop and inflation
    slows. 1 is correct.
The second tool is to increase reserve requirements on the amount of money
banks are legally required to keep on hand to cover withdrawals. The more money
banks are required to hold back, the less they have to lend to consumers. If they
have less to lend, consumers will borrow less, which will decrease spending.
The third method is to directly or indirectly reduce the money
supply. Increasing the interest paid on bonds so that more investors will buy
them. This policy will reduce the amount of money in circulation. 3 is correct.

    b) 2,3 and 4 only
    c) 1,2 and 4 only
    d) All of the above
    Solution: d)

other substances such as nitrogen oxides (NOx), sulfur oxides (SOx), mercury,
traces of other metals, and, for coal-fired plants, fly ash.
