Q1. Consider the following statements
- Purchasing Power Parity (PPP) exchange rates are calculated by comparing the prices of the same basket of goods and services in different countries.
- In terms of PPP dollars, India is the sixth largest economy in the world. Which of the statement/s given above is/are correct?
a) 1 only
b) 2 only
c) Both 1 and 2
d) Neither 1 nor 2
Solution : a)
Explanation :-
• Purchasing Power Parity is a way of measuring economic variables in different countries so that irrelevant exchange rate variations do not distort comparisons. It states that exchange rates between currencies are in equilibrium when their purchasing power is the same in each of the two countries. This means that the exchange rate between two countries should equal the ratio of the two countries’ price level of a fixed basket of goods and services.
• On the PPP basis, China is the world’s largest economy in 2018, followed by the United States at 2 and India at 3 position. Hence, option (a) is correct.

- It has 4 stages with 1st and 3rd being Solid.
Which of the above statements is/are correct?
a) 1 only
b) 2 only
c) Both 1 and 2
d) Neither 1 nor 2
Solution : b)
Explanation :- About PSLV
• The Polar Satellite Launch Vehicle (PSLV) is an expendable medium-lift launch vehicle designed and operated by the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO).
• It was developed to allow India to launch its Indian Remote Sensing (IRS) satellites into sun-synchronous orbits, a service that was, until the advent of the PSLV in 1993, commercially available only from Russia.
• The PSLV is 44-metre-high and has four stages with six strap-on booster motors on to the first stage that gives it a higher thrust during the initial flight moments.
• ISRO has developed and used different PSLV variants, including ones with either two or four strap-on motors, or the Core Alone variant without any strap-on motors.
• It has 4 stages with 1st and 3rd being Solid and 2th and 4th being Liquid stages.
• As the PSLV is not a reusable rocket, the first stage won’t be reclaimed and it will crash into the Indian Ocean.
• PSLV can also launch small size satellites into Geostationary Transfer Orbit (GTO).
• The PSLV has a history of successful launches of payloads that include Chandrayaan-
1, Mars Orbiter Mission and the space recovery mission. Hence, option (b) is correct.

a) 1 only
b) 2 only
c) Both 1 and 2
d) Neither 1 nor 2
Solution : b)

The term ‘currency manipulator’ is a label given by the US government to countries it feels are engaging in “unfair currency practices” by deliberately devaluing their currency against the dollar.
Hence Statement 2 is correct: The practice would mean that the country in question is artificially lowering the value of its currency to gain an unfair advantage over others. This is because the devaluation would reduce the cost of exports from that country and artificially show a reduction in trade deficits as a result.
Parameteres
• An economy meeting two of the three criteria in the Trade Facilitation and Trade Enforcement Act of 2015 is placed on the Monitoring List. This includes: o A “significant” bilateral trade surplus with the US — one that is at least $20 billion over a 12-month period. o A material current account surplus equivalent to at least 2 percent of gross domestic product (GDP) over a 12-month period.
o “Persistent”, one-sided intervention — when net purchases of foreign currency totaling at least 2 percent of the country’s GDP over a 12 month period are conducted repeatedly, in at least six out of 12 months.
Once on the Monitoring List, an economy will remain there for at least two consecutive reports “to help ensure that any improvement in performance versus the criteria is durable and is not due to temporary factors.
